ASCOLI PICENO - During the last months the institutional meetings between His Exc. Mons. Giovanni d'Ercole and the deaf of the territory, represented by the National Association of the Sordi, the Provincial Section of Ascoli Piceno and the MAS Marche, the Sordo Apostolic Movement, have intensified. .

Precious moments of encounter, during which it was possible to explain to an exceptional interlocutor and particularly interested, such as deafness, generating social isolation, is responsible for the poor participation of the faithful, unable to follow the SS Masses, and more generally , to participate in moments of religious formation, such as catechesis. Another very important question was also addressed, namely the social value of the Diocese in terms of integration, and therefore the great loss that comes to the deaf from failing to be an active and proactive part of parochial initiatives, pulsating hearts of the religious community.

The meeting with the provincial delegation of the ENS of Ascoli Piceno and then with the President Alessandro Malizia, offered an overview of the different existing communication barriers, which correspond to different types of deafness and a list of solutions on how to break down these barriers, making the moments of meeting in the diocese are definitely usable. Professional figures, or interpreters of Italian Sign Language and technological tools, or simultaneous subtitling and projection of texts, but also Magnetic Induction Amplification System. Deafness is a phenomenon that affects not only the members of the National Deaf Organization, that is people born or who have become deaf in developmental age. This is a much more widespread phenomenon, especially if you look at the elderly, inexorably protagonists of these experiences of isolation and in the most fragile period of the existential journey.

The response of His Excellency Mons.Giovanni d'Ercole did not take long to arrive. On the 1st of January, on the occasion of the Traditional SS Mass at the beginning of the year, in the presence of the deaf of the territory and an interpreter LIS who translated the function into the Sign Language, the Diocese's intent to make it accessible has been made official. the SS Masses of the Cathedral, both through the presence of an interpreter LIS and through simultaneous projection and subtitling, with the promise of activating also for the installation of a Magnetic Induction Plant, technology present in various European cathedrals and in Italy at Genoa, through which it is possible to improve the ability to listen to the prosthetic deaf.

An open path therefore, that time will perfect, with the aim of getting to make all the functions accessible. For now, all the SS Masses of the 1st Sundays of the Month and the most important SS Masses will be guaranteed (11.30), thanks to the collaboration of Sandra Felicioni - professional interpreter ANIOS - for the translation into LIS and to the National Deaf Organization for the projection of the texts. ANIOS is an association of Italian sign language interpreters that guarantees professionalism to the figure of the LIS interpreter; he is a member of the EFSLI, the European Forum of Sign Language Interpreters, and is included in the list of professional associations that issue the quality certificate established by the Ministry of Economic Development in accordance with law no. 4/2013.

Finally, on 12 January, the Episcopio hosted a delegation of the MAS, Apostolic Movement of the Sordo Marche and Abruzzo, which, in collaboration with ENS, chose the Ascoli location for the traditional celebration of Palm Sunday, March 29, 2015.


The cultural isolation that over the years has suffered the deaf person, often entrusted to institutions for the deaf, then called "deaf-mutes", has not prevented spiritual growth, thanks to Movements like the Mas, which, adapting religious content to the needs of communication, he became the promoter of the spiritual formation path of the deaf. The presence of Father Vincenzo di Blasio, National Ecclesiastical Assistant of the Movement, has clarified to His Excellency D'Ercole, the cultural matrixes and operational details of the traditional "Easter of the Deaf", which for more than twenty years has been organized in the main different cities of the Peninsula , annually gathering hundreds of deaf people from all over Italy, and for 2015 will be hosted in the Diocese of Ascoli.
